The evolution of restraint in bacterial biofilms under nontransitive competition. Prado and Kerr 2008. Evolution.
"In sturctured, nontransitive communities, strains evolve that do not maximize their competitive ability."
Mostly theoretical pape showing that nontransitive (ie. rock-paper-scissors style) competition restrains evolution to some sub-optimal phenotype because "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".
Pretty freakin cool because I think most ecological interactions in nature are likely to be nontransitive but with much higher dimensionality.
